Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress Following Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
