Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
