Cruise Cancelled In the Wake of Death of Female Passenger Left Behind on Island

An extensive two-month voyage circling the Australian Coast has been cancelled following the tragic passing of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the ship on a remote island.

The passenger had been hiking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the excursion for a pause. The liner sailed away leaving her and went back several hours later after the personnel discovered the passenger was missing.

A large-scale rescue mission discovered her person the subsequent day.

Officials are looking into the tragedy, alongside law enforcement and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer announced that passengers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the rest of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and previous mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he added that travelers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the travelers via chartered flights".

Authorities also published an latest statement, and said they had "provided a order to the Captain" banning any further travelers from getting on the liner.

The representative said that they would attend the ship in Cairns upon its return.

The liner initially left Cairns on October 24th, and was just two days into the voyage at the time of the 80-year-old's demise. The tropical location was the first stop on the itinerary.

Passengers on the ship - who typically pay substantial amounts of money to participate in the expedition - were transported there for a shore visit with the possibility of trekking or underwater exploration.

Next of Kin Statement

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her family was "shocked and saddened that the liner left the island after an organised outing without my mother".

In her statement, she characterized her mum as an "energetic octogenarian" who was a member of a walking club.

"From the little details we have been provided, it appears that there was a failure of attention and common sense," she said.

She added that she desired the investigation would be able to identify what "the operator should have performed that might have protected Mother's life".

"According to reports from the investigators that it was a very hot day, and mum became unwell on the hill climb," she revealed.

"She was asked her to go back, without accompaniment. Then the ship sailed away, reportedly without performing a passenger count.

"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or shortly after, mother succumbed, by herself."

Company Response

Via official communication, the Head affirmed that the operator was "working closely with investigators to assist their inquiry".

He mentioned that the company was "deeply sorry that this has transpired" and had offered its total backing to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The ship serves up to one hundred twenty guests with forty-six staff, according to official data. It was specifically designed to reach remote regions of Australia's shoreline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - small boats used to ferry passengers on day excursions.

Events such as this are rare, and passenger vessels have procedures to document which individuals are getting on or disembarking, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] aboard just isn't an possibility," an authority commented.

Cruise lines regard these procedures extremely carefully and have "advanced technology in place to stop such incidents from occurring," the authority continued.
