Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Creation That Shaped the Contemporary Globe

One can find numerous candidates to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, though, that honor should go to a automated sawmill conceived through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Prior to automated cutting, building a modest trading ship necessitated approximately 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber could be manufactured within a week.”

Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, which converted logs to planks using almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct ships faster than anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, financial and artistic supremacy in Europe and the globe.

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component converted its circular movement to up-and-down motion to power the cutting blade. Another component changed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber to the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the wood forward one precise increment per cycle.

“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them so the machine acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward stroke while moving on every return motion. It was a remarkably clever use of basic parts.”
